Once you have made the leap into investing in crypto currency, you want to make sure that no one can get their hands on it. After all, you don't wander around shouting out the pin codes and passwords to your credit cards and online banking – because you want to protect them. But how can you protect something that you can't see, feel, or touch?

There are in fact several different ways that you will be able to protect your coins, but there are two very simple and effective ways that are the best place to start. Firstly, encrypt your wallet. This means that the place where your coins are stored have a password protecting them, just like your typical online banking would. If you go into settings, you should see an option to encrypt your wallet. When choosing a password, make sure that it isn't ridiculously easy to decipher, like your birthday or your children's birthdays. Don't use your maiden name, or your mother's maiden name, and definitely don't use 'password'!

The second part is to secure your coins by backing up your wallet. This means saving the file in a second place, and not just only having one. You should be able to do this by clicking file, and then backup wallet.

There are loads of different places that you can back up your wallet. If you have a memory stick like a USB stick, that would be perfect – especially if it's one of the ones that you can pop onto your key chain. Another option would be to email it to yourself; then you would be able to access it on any computer. Of course, it is vitally important that you encrypt your wallet before you back it up anywhere, otherwise you've got no password protecting it, and you've made it even easier for someone to steal your coins.

With these two easy steps, you have greatly reduced the risk of losing or anyone stealing your coins.
